Many gardeners get plant fever in the spring, and rightly so, but fall is by far the best time of year to install trees and shrubs. During cooler temperatures, roots grow as they reach deeper for moisture and since they do not have to compete with top growth for nutrients. Fall and winter root growth results in plants with a larger root mass which are better equipped for the upcoming summer heat. This makes the transition so much easier for you, with lower plant maintenance, and for the plants to get a healthier start.
Also, October is the best time to plant those fall/winter bedding plants before the ground hardens with cold. Plants like ornamental cabbage, chard, kale and pansies like the cooler air but perform better if installed while ground temperatures are still moderately warm. The warm ground stimulates their developing root structure, making them more resistant to drought, disease, and cold, with larger top growth, more blooms and color. Similar concepts apply to the fall edible garden too.
So what do you envision for next spring in your lawn? Take advantage of the fall weather and start planting trees and shrubs now, so they are better prepared for Spring and Summer. Whether you are looking at installing some shade trees, shrubs and fruit trees or installing a fall garden and annual color, now is the time to make it happen.
