It's that time! We've made it through the holidays, and it's already time to start transitioning toward spring. Edibles are going to create some buzz this year. Wise Nurseries is working hard to set the standard for edible plant material in the Southeast. By maintaining high quality at competitive prices, and specializing in varieties that thrive in the Southeast, our trees are sure to please. Plus, most of our edibles come with picture tags with care instructions!
We currently have the nicest crop we've ever grown of apples, pears, peaches, plums and much more. Let's take a tour through some of our edible plant selections...
We have a large selection of properly pruned 15gal Nectarines and Peaches: including Fantasia, Babcock, Elberta, Donut and more. We take the time to properly prune them and keep them vase shaped, low, & well branched with open centers. This method is how the pros do it in the production orchards to allow good sunlight penetration and air flow. This pruning method also lowers pest and disease exposure while producing sweeter fruit that's easier to pick. These trees are ready to make an INSTANT ORCHARD in your back yard!
We also carry a large selection of other fruit trees in 15gallons including Pomegranates (shown in picture), Pears, Asian Persimmons, Jujubes, Citrus and more. Our wide variety makes us the best resource when it comes to getting the material you need for instant back-yard orchards. Most of these 15gal trees will have fruit on them the first year.
You may be surprised by the size and variety of our fig crop. We have many sizes and types to choose from, including the LSU purple and Ischia. (Use Ischia if you're having a bird problem; the figs stay green on the outside even when ripe, which fools the birds). We also carry your traditional varieties like Brown Turkey and Celeste.
Check out these really nice Carolina Everbearing Raspberries. These are some really heavy producers of high quality berries. They do benefit from a little afternoon shade or filtered sun. We also have a crop of Heritage raspberries that will be ready mid-summer.
We are proud growers of the Auburn University Series of plums that were bred especially for the Southeast. You won't find these for sale in very many local places. They are absolutely gorgeous! As you can see, they have open centers with a vase shape build. These trees have been cared for and pruned above standards, positioning them for proper structure in the years to come. We trim our apples, peaches, pears and plums in the same way. They are the nicest 5gals I personally have ever seen.
Our apples include varieties that mature from summer to fall. Some of the varieties we carry include Anna, Dorsett, Ein Shemer, Gala, Granny Smith, Fuji and more. Take note of the heads on these. You wont find that in the box stores!
If you are looking for canning or food plot pears, try Keiffer, Orient and Pineapple. These pears are more of your traditional sand pear style that you find on old farms. We also have a large selection of high-quality, fresh-eating pears like Ayers and Moonglow.
I can't leave out the Asian pears! We carry Shinko and 20th Century. The disadvantage to growing Asian pears is that once you eat one, you won't want any other type again. Many people refer to them as apple pears because they are as sweet as apples. They have a long shelf life of 3 months or more if stored properly.
More good news! We now carry the new Veinte Cohol Banana! These fast cycle banana plants are special. They can be affected by cold, even dying back in winter; then reflourishing in spring to produce flower and fruit in seven months. The Veinte Cohol is the fastest among bananas to traverse this cycle. They are also the first producer of quality bananas you can grow in Zone 8 without extensive cold protection measures, typical of most banana plants.
We are so excited to offer these edibles! These are just a few examples of what we will have in stock this year. Feel free to call or email if you have any questions. Step out of the box and get ahead of the pack!
